Bridging the gap

From EMDR Basic Training to Complex Trauma + Dissociation

You know the EMDR protocol. Complex trauma is where the next step gets harder to see.

Reprocessing stalls. A client goes quiet or shuts down. A protective part steps in right when the work is ready to move.

This advanced workshop helps EMDR-trained therapists assess for dissociation, understand protective responses, and choose practical next steps with complex trauma clients. Building on the AIP model, it brings together Polyvagal-informed strategies, parts work, and EMDR modifications, with clinical examples and hands-on practice along the way.

The goal is to leave with greater confidence in what you're seeing in session and practical strategies you can put to work with your complex trauma clients.

  • Recognize and Assess Dissociation: Understand how dissociation shows up in complex trauma and how screening tools such as the DES and MID inform case conceptualization, treatment pacing, and preparation.

  • Understand Nervous System Responses: Use the three-color Polyvagal Trauma Traffic Light Model to recognize autonomic states and understand shutdown, freeze, and other protective responses in session.

  • Work With Protective Parts and Blocking Beliefs: Recognize protective beliefs, then use parts work and Polyvagal-informed strategies to support readiness for reprocessing.

  • Adapt Phase 4 When Reprocessing Gets Stuck: Explore three Phase 4 modifications—EMDR 2.0, CIPOS, and EMDR-Contained—with hands-on practice focused on maintaining grounding and dual attention.
